How to fix a running toilet flapper.

A running toilet is often a flapper or chain problem. Start inside the tank before replacing larger fill-valve parts.

Safe order

  1. 1Set the tank lid on a towel so it cannot crack.
  2. 2Flush and watch whether the flapper seals flat.
  3. 3Adjust the chain so it has a little slack.
  4. 4Wipe mineral buildup from the flapper seat.
  5. 5Replace the flapper if rubber is warped, slimy, or cracked.
